Cloninger and Son Electric has a long history of servicing Helena and the surrounding area. We have worked all over the state of Montana at various times as well. The business has evolved into what it is today after years of hard work, honesty and dedication to the trade and it’s customers.
Leonard started his electrical apprenticeship in 1976, became a licensed journeymen in 1980 and master in 1983. Mike started working with his Dad and learning about the trade at a young age. Mike knew early on he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as an electrician. Mike started his apprenticeship in high school, at the age of 16, and became the youngest Journeyman to be licensed in the State of Montana at the age of 20, in 2003. This was the beginning of the father-son duo, Cloninger & Son Electric. Mike then earned his master electrician license in 2018. “Leading the way with quality workmanship” has always been the moto of the electrical business.
Leonard and Mike have always strived to be “the small shop that can take on the big project” while working hard to acquire the tools and machinery needed to get the work done on a large scale. Whether it be an excavator or fork lift, trencher, man lifts, trailers, tuggers and benders, they have always been able to produce and bring in work in a timely manner.
One piece of the business puzzle is to add employees. Each employee has enhanced our business and helped us grow and learn along the way. We value each employee and appreciate their dedication and energy they bring to our business. Our employees have remained with us for many years and are valued members of our electrical business. Leonard’s wife, Carol and Mike’s wife, Catie, add valuable support to the business over the years.
Cloninger & Son Electric is a long-standing, reputable Helena business and we are honored to continue to serve our customers and strive to meet their electrical needs in a timely, professional manner.

Cloninger & Son Electric, LLC was started in July 2005 as Leonard and Mike Cloninger wanted to work together as a team, being father and son. Leonard and Mike have worked together most of their electrical careers, took separate paths for a few years, and realized they enjoy working together, thus forming Cloninger & Son Electric.
Leonard and Mike continued together, hiring a few other wonderful employees along the way, but always knowing they wanted to keep the business small and close. Leonard retired from the electrical trade in 2016 after 41 years as an electrician, but remains an important member of the family business.
